Gorgeous Johnlock story
The Burning Heart

By may_shepard

Word count: 119,461

Chapters: 21/21

Rating: Mature

Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, John Watson/Original Male Character(s)

When Sherlock dies, John Watson feels like his life is over too. He’s completely shut down, until Mark Morstan, a new nurse at John’s medical clinic, catches his attention, and helps him uncover the long buried truth of his attraction to men.

Although he’s certain he’ll never get over Sherlock, John plans to move on, and build a new life with Mark, unaware that Sherlock is not quite as dead as he appears, and that Mark is hiding secrets of his own.

Rec: This is literally what could have happened if the writers had followed through on the “retired” assassin characterization they set up. And let me tell you, it’s spectacular. The fact that Morstan is portrayed as a man here is an excellent twist that eases the way for Johnlock somewhat (although one could argue that suggestions of Joltolock did that in canon) but honestly the biggest service it did for me was to emphasize how very clearly Mary’s character was derailed by trying to squash her into some foreordained notions of femininity. Because this guy, this Mark Morstan, is literally Mary. Nothing changed but the genitals. The coverups, the deceits, the lies, the underlying rot, the cheerful, assimiliated exterior, the easygoing, friendly overtures toward Sherlock. The tattoos and dimples. The restless, dangerous soul at the core.

Which is not to say that the plot lines from series 3 are rehashed at all. There’s no Magnussen, for one; the Guardsman case and AGRA turn out entirely differently; and my gosh, Harry! Although she doesn’t turn up until quite late, she’s absolutely marvellous, as are several other OC’s and their delightful surprises. The dialogue is another stellar achievement which recalled to me some of the very best of the canon exchanges: fresh, funny, sharp, snappy, and clever. And with all that, there is never a single dull moment, with plenty of BAMF John taking charge of his own fate, romantic gestures, mad pining, dead bodies popping up around every corner, spy masters, mind games, and the fraughtest, most drawn-out slow burn UST you’ll find this side of London. This is the fic this fandom deserves.

Thanks for the rec! I always trust your judgement. So many stories in this fandom that it's not easy to find the really good ones.
